The Jandernoa family of Dutch Meadows Dairy hosted the event. They milk 1,100 cows and hope that this event will give their neighbors, friends, and anyone else who visited an appreciation for the dairy industry. At the end of the day, about 1,000 people visited the farm. They enjoyed breakfast (pancakes, sausage, strawberries, and milk), ice cream, popcorn, a tour of the entire farm, and a hayride over to see the baby calves.
Throughout my visit, I was amazed and inspired to see so many people from the dairy industry taking the time to volunteer, sponsor, or even just come for breakfast to support the event. Something like this is just what dairy farmers’ need right now. Every dairy farmer (no matter if they milk 3,000 or 100 cows) is struggling with the rapid milk price changes over the last 16 months. I left the farm today feeling very optimistic about the future.
“Earlene” the cow seemed to be a pretty big hit with the kids. The udder is a water jug with bottle nipples coming out the bottom. They all took turns milking her and filling up the bucket!

My favorite part was the Milking Parlor Station. The parlor was too narrow for all the visitors to go in so they had a live-feed camera hooked up and we could watch everything on the monitor at the table. They also had a Milker Unit (complete with vacuum suction) for you to stick your finger in!
This was a great motivator for me. Dairy Discovery will be hosting Friday Family Nights July 10th and 17th from 6-9pm. And I am really looking forward to SwissLane Dairy’s 4th Annual Neighbor Night at the end of September!
